Human & Animal Rights
  • SEXUALITY RIGHTS
TITLE: Gay Rights
PRESENTERS: Nur E'zzati binti Zahari & Nikolai Prettner

Summary:
Issues concerning sexuality are often regarded in Malaysia as taboo. This workshop aims to shed light on some of the challenges faced by lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) in order to be accepted by society. The talk will also explore how much freedom the gay community has in two countries; Malaysia and Austria. With this juxtaposition, we attempt to explain the immense contrast that exists between them.

  • RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
TITLE: Child Trafficking
PRESENTERS: Lynda Ndong & Gwyneth Liu

Summary:
Child trafficking is a global problem. It is estimated that about 1.2 million children are trafficked every year. It is considered one of the most lucrative criminal activities as there is a high demand for children for cheap labour and sexual exploitation.  Being a destination and source country for human trafficking, Malaysia plays a significant role in this. There should be proper laws in place to end this unjust trade that is a form of modern slavery.
 
  • ANIMAL RIGHTS
TITLE: Voices for the voiceless
PRESENTERS: Lee Si Ting, Gan Wen Huang & Sheryl Lynn Chan Lee Thin

Summary:
These days, animals are being used worldwide as slaves to us humans. We treat them badly and do not even care how they feel. Our workshop will cover certain fields such as factory farming, animal testing and animal's fur. We will also talk about their welfare in each field mentioned and the steps that can be taken to stop their mistreatment once and for all.

TITLE: Burmese Refugees in Malaysia
PRESENTERS: Nur Deana Fairuz Binti Ahmad Zafir & Melvyn Chong

Summary:
Even as a developing nation, the international law and rights of a refugee are still being exploited in this day and age in Malaysia. The focus of this workshop would be to expose the true situation of Burmese refugees in Malaysia and how they should be treated by the Malaysian government. We will also be looking into the actions that have been taken and what we can do to help. We will also be touching on the subject of human trafficking, as it is a controversial issue in Malaysia.

    • GLOBAL HEALTH
    TITLE: Global Health-AIDS. Should you be afraid?
    PRESENTERS: Germaine Chong Sue Lynn & Ju Muru

    Summary:
    AIDS is the end-stage result of infection with the HIV virus which has resulted in progressive damage to the immune system. The advent of AIDS in early 1981 surprised the scientific community, as many researchers at that time viewed the world to be on the brink of eliminating infectious disease. We all know or at least have heard about AIDS. We all know its epidemic effects it has on our world. The big question is, should we fear it?
    • EXPLOITATION OF THE POOR
    TITLE: International Agencies-Friend or foe?
    PRESENTERS: Lyn Kam Jia Lin & Yau Rheymin

    Summary:
    Global International Agencies are there to make sure that everything runs smoothly. You can call them boss if you like because they make the rules around here so that there will be no complications. This has got to be good, right? Or are they?

    This talk focuses on two International Agencies; the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In this workshop, we will be focusing on what the WTO and IMF do and have done in the past. What do you think? Are they real? or just putting on an act? Most importantly, what can we do?

    TITLE: A Possibility or an Illusion? 
    PRESENTERS: Hussein Karim Manji

    Summary:
    Poverty; a word that has echoed throughout the world and has been heard endlessly for years and years. yet, it seems to be something that cannot be solved. I take this word now, analyze the concept, and using simple and modern methods, pose a solution to this problem of Poverty. Come hear me out as I tell you how Poverty Eradication is a possibility and not an illusion and what you and I can do at an individual, collective and universal level to play our parts.

    • CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION
    TITLE: A Fundamental Human Right
    PRESENTERS: Jasmine & Nuraini

    Summary:
    884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water, which is roughly one in eight of the world's population. 2.6 billion People in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation, that is almost two fifths of the world's population. The statistics are there and its numbers will keep on rising if we do not do anything about it. We take water and sanitation for granted. It is time for us to stop and live in the shoes of others who are less fortunate. Are you ready? Join our workshop and take part in tackling this global crisis. We present you, CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION; A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT.

    • BIODIVERSITY LOST
    TITLE: Biodiversity Loss
    PRESENTERS: Lai Wei Shi & Yi Se Rib

    Summary:
    The Malaysian Dilemma from an environmental perspective. As Malaysians, we often feel proudest of our ethnic diversity. Yet, as we celebrate our multicultural identity, we are fast losing another part of it. From orangutans to the Malayan sun bear, Malaysian wildlife is being threatened by rapid development every second that we forget about its importance.

    • OCEAN HEALTH
    TITLE: Care about 71% of the Earth
    PRESENTERS: Swa Yee Jing & Liz Kim

    Summary:
    Flying over the open water, all you would see is clear, blue sea, untouched, not a boat on the horizon. You wouldn't know that beneath the surface, the ocean was hurting or that humans were the cause. Our ocean health is getting worse nowadays. Human activities which are not properly managed affect the well-being of our oceans. Get to know what the condition of the ocean is through this workshop.

      • WOMEN'S RIGHT
      TITLE: The Oppression of Women
      PRESENTERS: Ma lina & Wansi

      Summary:
      In some places, women's rights are institutionalized or supported by law, local custom, and behavior; whereas in others they may be ignored or suppressed.  These rights differ from country to country and the roots of the law lie deep within each country's history. Many country's take on a patriarchal dominance where the men rule and do as they please towards women.
      • INDIGENOUS RIGHTS
      TITLE: Indigenous Rights
      PRESENTERS:  Anis & Adina

      Summary:
      Imagine being a First Nations citizen and not having rights in your own land. How would you feel? In this workshop, you will learn about the problems faced by the indigenous people in Malaysia (Orang Asli) such as forced resettlement and the rights to health care and education. Join us and learn about some possible solutions to these problems.

        • FREEDOM OF SPEECH
        TITLE: The Truth Behind the Truth
        PRESENTERS: Ranee Gan Fern Fern & Gowri Chitra Martin

        Summary:
        Besides talking about Freedom of Speech in the media as a whole, we will be emphasizing on Malaysia as well. Our workshop will be divided into four sections which are Politics, Entertainment, Racial-Religious Views and the Environment. These sections will be further broken down into three parts; namely Distortion of Facts, Censorship and Freedom of Opinion. We will be focusing on specific case studies in different countries for each of these parts. Come see our workshop for an exposé on the secrets of the media.

        TITLE: Do You Know Your ABC's?
        PRESENTERS: Umer Murtaza & Nelson Lim

        Summary:
        The Global Campaign for Education is made up of organizations and individuals who believe that it is imperative that everyone has an education. The gains made in education, are a sign that the goals are possible.  The world knows how many people do lack in education and also has resources to ensure everyone has an education.  The Global Campaign for Education exists to ensure that governments and institutions keep their promises and that Education for All really is achieved.

        TITLE: Losing Roots
        PRESENTERS: Dickson Lau & Klaus Cesar Poppe

        Summary:
        Unique, One of a kind. Special. Different. Call it what you want but that’s what we strive to be. Yet, ironically, as humanity progresses, the one thing that defines who we are, creates specialization and differentiation in the world is suffering great loss. Come and witness the great loss of culture that we are experiencing throughout the globe and learn of its effects on the future. Witness possible futures based on the real presents and forgotten pasts.

          • DEFORESTATION
          TITLE: Will Tree Killing Ever End?
          PRESENTERS: Geraldine Tan Shu Wen & Lim Khye Yuen

          Summary:
          While the problem of deforestation is now recognized as a very serious and important one, it is yet to be effectively addressed by governmental and international organizations. If deforestation continues, future generations will be faced with a mountain of environmental problems to solve. Do we really want to see our children suffer?

          • GLOBAL WARMING
          TITLE: You Give Me Fever! 
          PRESENTERS:  Nigel & Kushal

          Summary
          Many people don’t realize we are contributing to global warming and rising sea levels because of the greenhouse gases we are putting into the atmosphere. Join us to stop Global Warming and become part of the movement to demand that our leaders reduce carbon dioxide emissions now. As we are all contributors to global warming, it would take all of us to solve this problem.

            Participants may only choose ONE workshop for EACH SESSION as these workshops will happen simultaneously during their session. Hence, each participant are only able to go to two student workshops.
