YVONNE FOONG

Finding yourself

Life is meant to be of trials. By enduring hardships and overcoming challenges, we become stronger individuals. The trick is in learning to rise above our pre-conditionings and environment. To endure without becoming bitter is stnrength.

During this 40-minute talk, I will share with you my story – from my growing up years as a healthy child to being diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder at 16, how I wrote a book and started a campaign to acquire better treatments in America, how I discovered myself after nine critical surgeries and the lessons learned.

Themes: Hope, love, faith, personal strength, self-esteem.

  LOYAR BUROK

LoyarBurok and PusatRakyatLB (aka Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism & Human Rights)

LoyarBurok is a blawg (blog + law = www.loyarburok.com) with a great vision to provide a forum for everyone with an interest in anything and who do not wish to take themselves too seriously. It seeks to:
1.    evoke discussions on the state of the world, human rights, government, legal profession, judicial system; and share other cultural and lifestyle issues such as movies, theatre, food, travel, books, music and anything else which tickles their awesome minds in a manner that is provocative, amusing, entertaining and creative;
2.    create awareness and activism on issues of concern such as violations of human and animal rights, and to seek improvements in the way they order and structure their lives.

Today, LoyarBurok is grown to become a unique community blawg with posts, spam, comments running to the thousands, and more than 250 LoyarBurokkers (and counting) contributing to the blawg. Yes, we want YOU too!
In 2011, Lord Bobo felt that the time was right for a physical manifestation of LoyarBurokness on earth and play a larger role in the nation’s drive towards being a more civilised society. Aside from being our base of operations, PusatRakyatLB provides a safe space for today’s youth to constructively engage, discuss and educate themselves (and others) about our political, social and cultural issues as well as providing a platform for other beneficial rakyat oriented-initiatives.

PusatRakyatLB will also launch the first-of-its-kind non-partisan citizen education project, UndiMalaysia!

UndiMalaysia! is set to be a massive hands-on citizen initiative operation to empower the rakyat to take ownership of our country as opposed to leaving it to the negligence, despotism and corruption of our elected representatives. We hope that citizens would come to understand that demanding accountability and transparency from their representatives is not privilege or a blessing, but a constitutionally-enshrined right that has not been exercised effectively for far too long.

Yes, we want YOU too! Join us. Move with us. Move us. UndiMalaysia! #rocksmsia

Amnesty International Malaysia Profile:

Amnesty International Malaysia (AIM) is a non-profit non-government organization and our member’s campaign actively for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone. Our key focus is to generate public interest in human rights in view of creating a better human rights culture for all.

TOPIC: DEATH PENALTY
Imagine… a world without the death penalty. Would the entire fabric of our existence dissolve into anarchy? How far is too far in seeking retribution? This workshop will seek to dispel the myths of the death penalty as a deterrence and as an effective crime prevention tool. Gain new insights on this sentence and the ripple of effect it has on its victims. There has been a vast literature of views and opinions on this issue and we would love to “Hear YOU out”!

"The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees and asylum-seekers worldwide. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum in another country and rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

SUARAM

Title of Workshop: Rights of Refugees, in conjunction with combating xenophobia.

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM)
1987 saw one of the most widespread crackdowns on social and political activists in living memory – Operasi Lalang. 106 opposition leaders, social activists, religious teachers and educationists were detained without trial under the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA). Many were detained for up to 2 years. When the last of the detainees were released in 1989, the Detainees’ Family Support Group, ISA detainees and other activists formed ‘Suara Rakyat Malaysia’ or SUARAM to campaign for the abolition of the ISA. What started as a single-issue campaign evolved into an activist movement for human rights and democracy in the following years. Presently, SUARAM works towards the realisation of fundamental liberties, democracy and justice in Malaysia.

SUARAM is celebrating their 60th Anniversary of the 1951 Convention!!
